Why You'll Never Make It
I’ve had the notion of failure on my mind lately, why some failures seem monumental, and the difference between those that seem so big and the micro failures that we all quickly dismiss as irrelevant. I had what felt like an epiphany about this while making my morning coffee. As I am tweaking the mess I made I had the thought that this coffee is a giant failure. But why do these failures seem so small, while we let other failures, like losing a potential client, change the course of our lives? Failure shouldn’t be the end all be all, it shouldn’t be an endgame. We all experience this, the fear of your creativity not being good enough. This is me, I am all of you, I am afraid. So how do we fix this? We dare to fail. We use our failures to become better, to improve. So take my challenge, post a photo of one of your failures on instagram, and dare to fail with me. Go check out my failed photo on instagram and when you post yours use the hashtag #DareToFailAE.
“ Fail to succeed. At the heart of art is failure, so fail often and fail hard.” -Adam Bell
Because if you’re unwilling to face your fears and fail, then you might as well quit.
If I wasn’t brave enough to get out of my comfort zone and try something new that would surely fail, I would’ve never been able to capture the 2nd photograph which incidentally is one of my all time favorites.
Fitness & Athletic Photoshoot
I got the chance to work with my good friend and amazing athlete Corinne Nicewick a few months back, but unfortunately as fate would have it, my microphone broke and no sound was recorded. But while stuck in quarantine, I was messing around with different songs and discovered that the photoshoot made for an interesting music video. The images and the video capture Corinne's personality and talent as she effortlessly did flip after flip to make sure I got the perfect shot each time.

#1 - Self Portraits
Self Portraits. You’ve probably seen everyone start doing these and that’s because who do you photograph when you don’t have anything to phothograh… yourself. This can be fun though, taking your portrait once a day can definitely make you into a better photographer. You still have to consider composition, lighting, and your pose. Doing this every day for a month or so You’ll have 30 pictures that, at the time, seem pointless to you but it’s only when you come to the end of the road that your work becomes something else.
It’s not an original idea, I know, but there’s something to learn from taking this self portraits, and it really teaches you to slow down and focus on the basics.
Something you can do is set up a bed sheet and have a DIY studio in your home or backyard.
#2 - Still Life
Still life photography. Whether it’s a plant, or stairs, the local architecture that surrounds you. Get in the habit of taking photos you normally wouldn’t take, or better yet, challenge yourself to make something that is seemingly uninteresting into well…interesting.
#3 Photograph Available Models
Some of you are stuck with family, roommates, friends, and I think it’s a good time to catch up on creating new memories. Trust me, the only thing you’ll regret is not taking MORE photos. Spending time with the people in your life is important, we not only take photos but we capture memories. Sounds cheesy, but it’s true.
#4 Abstract
Your greatest fear, your dark side, your dreams. Focus on one and see if you can produce 1 image a day that represents what you picked. Photograph the obvious, for example, say you’re scared of the dark, and you take a photograph in a dark room, well… what then? I think that once you eliminate the obvious you’ll force your imagination to go into overdrive and really start getting creative with your photos.
#5 Re: Visit/Edit/Focus
I know you’ve also seen this before but now is the PERFECT time to go back and revisit old work/ and maybe even clean out your computer. Look at all the photos you’ve taken and maybe re-edit a few of them. So much in photography is time captured and time passed. Our tastes and styles have changed so I think it’s beneficial to go back every now and again and revisit our old work. I think it’s important to continue to sharpen your skills even if there doesn’t seem to be much to photograph, it’s ok if you capture things that aren’t really your favorite, flat lays, still life, self portraits, architecture because when we’re all finally able to go back outside, you’ll be ready.
